The Disadvantages of Air Bags

How Carburetors Deliver Fuel


Fuel injectors work by injecting fuel into an engine. Carburetors work differently. These devices work more like a vacuum, sucking air or oxygen into the engine from the outside, thus allowing air to combine with fuel to provide the engine with the ingredients it needs to power up. 

A carburetor will also supply regular and systematic fuel to the car engine. Most carburetors are directly connected to the gas tank, typically by a fuel line and pump. The carburetor must be created in a manner that allows an adequate mixture of air and fuel. This ratio is specific to each individual car’s needs and engine. 

The ratio will constantly adjust depending on the car’s speed, make, mileage, and overall condition. The carburetor constantly works to maintain fuel efficiently and adapt the ratio of oxygen to fuel depending on the needs of the car, the demands of the car and other factors. Carburetors can warm up by quickening the speed at which car’s idle for several minutes. 

Carburetors also allow a sudden rush of power, as when a vehicle’s accelerator pad is suddenly pushed to the floor generating greater transmission to the vehicle. Passing gear assembly, located in the carburetor, allows vehicles to go from one gear to the next, with the carburetor making adjustments in power and fuel availability on demand.

How Does a Single Injection Engine Work?

Fuel injection simply refers to the means by which fuel is added to internal combustion engines, typically gasoline engines for cars. It has been the number one fuel delivery system for automobiles for many years, replacing the carburetors that used to be used through the late 90s. There are many different types of fuel injection systems that can be used successful.

Fuel injection systems atomize fuel so that fuel can be pumped through nozzles that are under high pressure. 

Single Point Injection Systems

The single-point injection system uses a single injector as the name implies, located at the throttle body or part of a vehicle where that controls how much air flows into the engine. It is also referred to as part of the air intake system on a vehicle. This system responds directly to how much pressure a driver puts on the accelerator pad on the car. This is sometimes located near the air filter and intake manifold, and may be located near a sensor. 

The single injection system was first used in the 1940s, largely by aircrafts, and often called pressure carburetor systems. General Motors first called the single point injection system the throttle-body injection; Ford referred to it as “central fuel injection” and Mazda called it the “EGI” system. 

Using this type of fuel injection, gas passes through intake runners much like it would a carburetor, thus it is a wet manifold fuel injection system. One of the reasons this system has been popular is that it was low-cost. The supporting parts for it including the air filter, cleaner and intake manifold could be used again. This system was highly used through the mid-1990s and can still be found on many vehicles.

More commonly now are directly injection systems and diesel engines which allow fuel to be injected directly into the combustion chamber. 

What is a Direct Injection Engine?

A direct injection engine refers to the way the combustion chamber operates within a car engine. There are many different types of ways to power up an automobile. Typically in gas powered cars, fuel injection is used to power up the car engine. This is an indirect way to get a car to work properly, and typically is associated with less fuel efficiency, allowing usable energy to be wasted in the process of getting your car going.

That means that you spend more money at the gas pump, which is never good for anyone. 

The Way Direct Engines Operate

Using direct injection engine technology, fuel enters a combustion chamber directly. Thus, fuel is able to burn evenly throughout the engine and more thoroughly. For a car engine to work properly, it requires fuel, oxygen and a spark in a traditional gas engine to get it moving properly. This spark starts the engine.

In a direct injection engine compared with a standard gas engine, a few different things take place. In an ordinary engine, fuel goes up the gas tank through a fuel line, and into an injector that is mounted on the car engine. The injector then sprays gas into the air intake, where the fuel will then mix with the oxygen creating a mist. At timed intervals, intake valves open allowing a piston to descend and sucking in this mist from the chamber located below it. The piston then goes back up; compressing the mixture making it much more compact then it was to begin with. That’s when the spark plug fires and ignites the engine using a mini explosion. 

Using direct injection technology, the fuel is simply directly injected into the combustion chamber, rather than waiting in the air intake tank. That means the fuel burns when it is needed making fuel burning more efficient. Generally there is more oxygen in the mixture making the mixture lean so that fuel is burned conservatively. 

Fuel is also burned more completely because fuel is directed where the combustion chamber is the hottest, and thus ends up closest to the spark, preventing fuel waste.

            The car market hasn't been as strong recently as we have seen in previous years.
